Principal investigators from the nine areas of research on the Can Ruti Campus met together to discuss topics of concern in the current research environment. During the day, researchers enjoyed inputs from the IGTP research community and external speakers and were able to take advantage of the many moments available for networking and sharing.
Manremyc, a spin-off of the IGTP specialised in the development of a probiotic against tuberculosis, has opened a funding round through Capital Cell, the first on-line investment platform in Europe specialized in biomedicine. The objective of the campaign is to reach 250,000 euros, with a minimum investment requirement per person of only 600 euros. Up to now, the company has secured 35% of the investment, which includes participation from the Reig family, main shareholders in the pharmaceutical company Reig Jofre.
Ten international projects have been selected for the second edition of CRAASH Barcelona and Aniling is one of them. CRAASH is the business acceleration programme organized by Biocat and CIMIT (Boston). Aniling is a spin-off company of the IGTP, which has developed a method for analysing the genome and epigenome of a patient simultaneously, an advance in personalized medicine for both research and clinical settings.
The belt, designed by a midwife at the Germans Trias Hospital, applies heat to the lumbar and suprapubic region, where the pain of contractions is strongest and allows the wearer to move about freely. The project included a clinical trial with 134 women participating, run by Laura Tarrats, who has been able to carry out the work thanks to the support of a Germans Trias Sapiens Award.
Ana Gamez has been awarded one of the 2018 Pioner Awards from the CERCA Institute (Research Centres of Catalonia). The aim of the prize is to recognize and highlight researchers who have just read their thesis and whose results have a clear commercial orientation.
The Covergel project to develop an innovative hydrogel applicable by endoscope has been recognized as the best project in the third Edition of the IDEA2 Global, an international mentoring programme developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Covergel was chosen from the 15 teams participating in the 2018 edition.
The project, called "Innovation in Tuberculosis - INNOVA4TB", is promoted and coordinated by the research group Innovation in Respiratory Infections and Tuberculosis Diagnosis, led by Dr Jose Domínguez and Dr Cristina Prat. The proposal has received more than a million euros in funding from the 2018 call for Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) actions
The second edition of HEALTHIO, a trade fair for health and innovation at the Fira de Barcelona, was held on 16-18 October. It brought together members of the public, health professionals and innovative small companies in an open space designed to promote dialogue between all the players in the healthcare ecosystem and promote evolution of the sector.
An IGTP project is amongst the twenty selected this year for support by the Caixaimpulse Programme of the "la Caixa" Foundation and CaixaCapital Risc. The project led by Dr Dr Lorenzo-Zúñiga and Dr Ramon Bartolí of the Translational Endoscopy Group, aims to enter into production of CoverGel, a topical hydrogel for use in therapeutic endoscopic operations to avoid heat damage to the intestinal mucosa.
In June this year the new Comparative Medicine and Bioimage Centre of Catalonia (CMCiB) started its normal working activities. Located at the highest point of the campus, the CMCiB is a centre promoted by the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) and dedicated to biomedical research and training. The centre is an important addition to scientific infrastructures in southern Europe and is the only one in Spain, it has been set up to become a reference in comparative medicine, bioimaging and computational models with a clear remit to promote alternative research models and methods
