Successful turnout at the 1st CORE IGTP Scientific Conference, a meeting to advance population health research

On Wednesday, 11 June 2025, the first CORE IGTP Scientific Conference was held at the Badalona International Business Centre (BCIN), an initiative of the CORE Program that aims to establish itself as an annual space for meeting, debate and scientific exchange among professionals involved in population health research.
The event brought together nearly one hundred participants, including program members and external professionals linked to epidemiology, clinical and translational research, data science and primary care. The conference featured a series of talks, practical case presentations and collaborative working sessions aimed at fostering synergies and sharing scientific and methodological knowledge.
The opening session featured contributions from institutional authorities such as Esteve Fernández (Department of Health), Jordi Barretina (Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute, IGTP) Josep Basora (IDIAP Jordi Gol) and Cristina Vilaplana (Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol). This was followed by Jordi Casabona (CEEISCAT) and Pere Torán (IDIAP), who introduced the objectives and philosophy of the CORE program.
The keynote speaker, Dr Víctor Moreno (Catalan Institute of Oncology, ICO), highlighted the opportunities offered by collaborative research both nationally and internationally, emphasising the value of inter-institutional and interdisciplinary alliances as drivers of progress in population health.
Throughout the morning, various case studies were presented focusing on topics such as genomic surveillance, HIV/AIDS research, emerging technologies in brain health, and the implementation of public health strategies. Experts from institutions such as GCAT'Genomes For Life (GCAT lab), CEEISCAT, Institut Guttmann, IDIAP, IGTP and PROSICS participated.
One of the highlights of the event was the thematic group work session, where attendees discussed and proposed future lines of work around six key areas: molecular biology, community interventions, clinical and translational research, artificial intelligence, information systems, and primary care.
The conference concluded with a summary of the groups' conclusions and final remarks from the program directors, followed by an informal refreshments and networking session that encouraged interaction and the creation of new collaborations.
With this first edition, the CORE IGTP Scientific Conference is established as a key event for professionals committed to advancing research in population health, with a future-oriented outlook and a clear aim to work in a coordinated and transformative way.
The CORE Program is a multidisciplinary network of researchers united by shared interests and resources in population research at the Can Ruti Campus. As one of the transversal programs of the IIS IGTP, CORE is part of the IGTP strategy to promote research that positively impacts public health.
