Innovation at IGTP

The Can Ruti Campus is a multidisciplinary space, where several biomedical institutions that produce leading scientific research at both national and international level are located. The synergies they produce have created a unique ecosystem for the development of innovation projects.

On campus the different institutions promote translational medicine and professionals carry out research, foster innovative ideas and generate knowledge designed to meet unmet clinical needs. This atmosphere has led the Innovation Unit of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute to create a technology transfer model based on:

  • Promotion of a culture of innovation among researchers that encourages motivating work environments, favors the generation of ideas, creativity, collaborations between professionals and an entrepreneurial vocation.
  • The provision of a program to support projects with transfer potential, which allows their valorization and facilitates their transfer and an economic return for the Institute.
  • The promotion of an open innovation model that complements the skills and technologies developed at the IGTP and establishes collaborations with other centers, companies and service providers
  • Consolidation of the leadership of the Institute in research and innovation and promotion of its international projection.

The annual indicators of the Institute show the growth of innovative proposals in recent years, proposals that are meeting some of the great challenges of R+D+i. With 8 spin-offs, more than 160 active patents and approximately 30 licensing agreements, we are positioned as a center of reference and excellence in innovation in health.

The innovation model we use at the IGTP aims to catalyze and energize the projects that need to be commercialized. Through our program we support researchers in matters of validation of opportunities, funding, intellectual protection or transfer strategy.

As of April 2023, we have become an EATRIS Expert Centre, enabling us to provide services related to innovation management and health technology assessment through this network.

Progress in developing specific immunotherapies for type 1 diabetes

Researchers from IGTP and Ahead Therapeutics have been exploring a treatment based on liposome-type nanoparticles to address the autoimmunity of type 1 diabetes for years. A study recently published in the Journal of Autoimmunity examines the response of macrophages to this immunotherapy, serving as a preliminary step before clinical trials.

Innomed programme kicks off

The Innomed programme has been launched with the ambition of transforming the landscape of health innovation at the Can Ruti Campus, creating synergies between the public and private sectors. With a structured approach around three key axes - nurturing the culture of innovation, fostering project incubation, and facilitating cross-sector collaboration - Innomed aims to turn knowledge into action to achieve tangible impact on the healthcare community.
