IGTP’s podcast launches a new episode dedicated to multiple sclerosis
Un bri de ciència, the podcast from the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP), has released its tenth episode to mark World Multiple Sclerosis Day

Multiple sclerosis is a neurological and autoimmune disease that affects around 9,000 people in Catalonia and nearly three million worldwide. It is a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheath - the protective covering of nerve fibres - leading to a wide range of symptoms, from vision problems and fatigue to motor difficulties and cognitive impairment. It is most commonly diagnosed in young adults, particularly women, and although there is currently no cure, existing treatments can help manage relapses and slow disease progression.
The tenth episode of Un bri de ciència features Eva Martínez-Cáceres, leader of IGTP's Immunopathology research group and head of the Immunology Department at Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital, and Cristina Ramo, researcher in the same group at IGTP and head of the Neurology Department at Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid. It also includes the testimony of a patient who shares what it is like to live with multiple sclerosis.
The researchers from IGTP discuss various aspects of the disease, including the role of the immune system, diagnosis, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They also highlight their main lines of research, which focus on identifying biological markers to assess treatment adherence and on developing and testing new therapies using innovative approaches.
Un bri de ciència is an IGTP initiative that gives a voice to its researchers and brings biomedical research closer to the general public. The podcast contributes to the institute's goals of raising awareness and promoting scientific outreach.
The episode is available now on Spotify, iVoox and Apple Podcasts. Please note that the podcast is in Catalan.
