PATH – Program of Advanced Therapies

Connecting research, innovation and clinical application in advanced therapies

Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) comprise a next-generation treatments, including those based in genes, stem cells and tissue engineering, aimed at repairing, replacing or regenerating biological functions across a wide range of human diseases.

The Can Ruti Campus brings together a critical mass of expertise in this field, including research groups working at both preclinical and clinical stages, as well as specialised support units and technological platforms or infrastructures.

In this context, the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) has launched the Program of Advanced Therapies (PATH), a transversal initiative designed to structure and strengthen these capabilities across the Can Ruti Campus alongside institutions that are part of the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria (IIS) IGTP.

The Program builds on IGTP's positioning in advanced therapies, including its participation in the national Consorcio CERTERA network and its recognition within the Advanced Therapies Hub of Catalonia (ATMP Catalonia), to advance in the recognition of the Can Ruti Campus leadership in regenerative medicine.

Objectives

PATH is structured around four main objectives:

  • To promote translational research in ATMPs through innovative projects integrating basic and applied knowledge, with the aim of developing new therapeutic solutions for complex or unmet medical needs.
  • To establish and consolidate technological platforms and strategic resources ensuring the production, characterisation and validation of ATMPs under quality, safety and regulatory standards.
  • To foster multidisciplinary collaboration across research centres, hospitals, universities and industry partners at national and international level.
  • To develop specialised training and outreach activities targeting healthcare professionals, researchers and the wider community.

A coordinated ecosystem

PATH currently brings together around 20 research groups and multiple technological units across the campus, reinforcing the connection between research, innovation and clinical application.

The Program is focused on strengthening coordination across the full pipeline - from preclinical research to clinical implementation - and on activating a collaborative network of capabilities across institutions.

Key areas of activity include:

  • Scientific and technical advice
  • Project development and applications
  • Training and workshops
  • Identification of strategic needs, including infrastructure, regulatory support and networking

Governance

Currently, PATH is led by a multidisciplinary team bringing together expertise in research, clinical development and translational science across the Can Ruti Campus institutions.

Program directors:

  • Joan Vidal Samsó (Institut Guttmann)
  • Carol Gálvez-Montón (IGTP)

Program coordinators:

  • Marcel·la Franquesa (IGTP)
  • Elisabeth Castellanos (IGTP)
  • Santiago Roura (IGTP)
  • Iñigo Pérez (Institut Guttmann)

A transversal IGTP program

PATH forms part of IGTP's transversal Program strategy, alongside initiatives such as CORE and CARE, contributing to a coordinated model that connects basic, translational and clinical research.

The Program is open to all basic and clinical investigators from institutions within Campus Can Ruti to support progress along the advanced therapies roadmap.
