Mental health, stigma and new models of psychiatric care in the latest episode of ‘Un bri de ciència’

- Campus Can Ruti, Outreach, Success Stories

To mark World Mental Health Day (10 October), the podcast by the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) and Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital (HUGTiP) releases its twelfth episode, featuring a conversation with Jorge Cuevas, head of the Adult Psychiatry Service at HUGTiP, researcher of IGTP's Psychiatry and Mental Health Research Group and associate professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Mental health is an integral part of people's wellbeing and everyday lives. According to the World Health Organization, in 2023 nearly one in seven people worldwide were living with a mental disorder. Closer to home, around 11% of primary care visits are related to anxiety. Although mental health is increasingly discussed, Cuevas points out that stigma persists, particularly around certain disorders and psychiatric care in emergency departments or during hospitalisation.

Drawing on his clinical experience, the episode explores what we mean by mental health, when professional help should be sought, and the role of everyday habits and the people around us. It also addresses the importance of collaboration between the different professionals involved in care.

The conversation also presents some of the research projects being carried out at Germans Trias to advance new models of psychiatric care: the open-door hospitalisation model, the redesign of spaces and the model of care in emergency departments, and research into involuntary admissions and mechanical restraint.

With this new episode, 'Un bri de ciència' continues to bring science and health closer to the public in an accessible way, while showcasing the work carried out jointly by Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital and Research Institute.

The episode is now available on Spotify, iVoox and Apple Podcasts.
