IJC and IGTP join forces on two new initiatives to promote the use of Catalan in international scientific environments
The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) and the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) will launch two new collaborative initiatives within the framework of the CERCA grants for Catalan research centres to promote the use of the Catalan language in research. The projects strengthen collaboration between the two centres at the Can Ruti Campus, promoting Catalan as a language of cohesion, inclusion and science communication in a highly international scientific environment.
On the one hand, IJC will coordinate InterCAT - Harmonising internationalisation with the use of Catalan, in collaboration with IGTP. The project builds on CATalitza - Promoting the use of Catalan in research at IJC and aims to consolidate and expand the measures already introduced to facilitate the linguistic integration of international and non-Catalan-speaking staff, strengthen the provision of Catalan language training, create informal spaces for conversation and community-building, and increase the visibility of Catalan in scientific communication and public engagement.
On the other hand, IGTP will coordinate Research on stage: theatre to promote Catalan in multicultural scientific environments, with the participation of IJC. This initiative proposes a participatory theatre activity designed to address real-life situations of linguistic and intercultural friction in highly international research environments. Through a bespoke performance, followed by a forum discussion facilitated by an expert, the project aims to encourage reflection and empathy and foster concrete commitments towards more inclusive language practices.
Together, the two initiatives contribute to consolidating a shared campus-wide approach to managing multilingualism in international research environments. Through these projects, IJC and IGTP reinforce their commitment to a model of research that combines excellence and international outlook with strong roots in the local community, promoting Catalan as a living, useful and shared language within the scientific community, while embracing the linguistic and cultural diversity inherent to an international research centre.
