IGTP and Germans Trias Hospital join forces on the podcast Un bri de ciència, launching a new episode on myocardial infarction

- Campus Can Ruti, Outreach, Success Stories

As part of the European Day for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Risk, the podcast Un bri de ciència launches its eleventh episode, dedicated to myocardial infarction. This cardiac condition occurs when part of the heart stops receiving the blood it needs, a situation that requires swift action. Recognising the symptoms in time is key to reducing its consequences.

The episode explores myocardial infarction from both a clinical and a research perspective. This complementary view is reflected in the participation of two profiles: one from Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol (HUGTiP) and another from the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP). This is a new development for 2026, resulting from an alliance between the two centres, which will now collaborate to further develop the podcast and reach more people.

The new episode, titled "Myocardial infarction: when the heart calls for help", features two members of the Heart Institute of Germans Trias i Pujol (iCor): Ferran Rueda, cardiologist and head of the Coronary Care Unit at HUGTiP, and Santi Roura, researcher in the Heart Failure and Cardiac Regeneration (ICREC) research group at IGTP and associate professor at Universitat de Vic - Universitat Central de Catalunya.

From what happens in the heart to new strategies to repair it

The story begins by putting the scale of the problem into context. Although it is difficult to quantify precisely, it is estimated to affect between 1 and 2 people per 1,000. From there, the episode reviews the main symptoms and offers some guidance on how to recognise and respond to a possible myocardial infarction. It also discusses treatment and what life is like for patients after experiencing one.

The section dedicated to research highlights the cross-cutting approach of iCor, which integrates clinical care, research and teaching. It also underscores the role of innovation, with initiatives such as the spin-off NIMBLE Diagnostics, which has developed a device capable of detecting stents and monitoring their condition.

The episode also discusses lines of work such as the study of biomarkers and, in particular, the development of advanced therapies. Professionals at the Can Ruti Campus are leading figures in this field, with projects focused on advanced therapies and tissue engineering. One notable example is the PeriCord bioimplant, developed at IGTP in collaboration with the Banc de Sang i Teixits, with support from the Comparative Medicine and Bioimage Centre of Catalonia (CMCiB) during the preclinical phases.

Advanced therapies will play an important role in advances over the coming years, and IGTP will contribute actively through the launch of a new cross-cutting program on the Campus and its participation in the Advanced Therapies Hub of Catalonia, coordinated by Biocat.

With this new episode, Un bri de ciència continues its mission to bring science and health closer to the public in a dynamic and accessible way. On this occasion, it also strengthens the collaboration between the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital and Research Institute.

The episode is now available on Spotify, iVoox and Apple Podcasts. Please note that the podcast is in Catalan.
