The visit of the director of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) -a public body attached to the Ministry of Science and Innovation, responsible for the promotion, coordination and funding of health research- at the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) was an opportunity to learn first-hand about the latest advances and research and to discuss strategic issues.

Last week, IGTP received a visit from the director of the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), Dr Cristóbal Belda. The IGTP is accredited as a centre of excellence by the ISCIII and plays a very important role in the research and innovation structuring at the Can Ruti Campus. "Such visits are a good opportunity to align strategies, promote collaboration between the institutes and discuss their needs," explained Dr Jordi Barretina, IGTP’s general director.

The Institute collaborates with sector companies and institutions for the transfer of technology and the generation of added value. In this vein, Dr Belda stressed that "research has to be done thinking about the final need that can be covered in the health system". He also gave a positive assessment of the Institute's research and innovation indicators and the achievements of its spin-offs, highlighting the impact they have on the creation of jobs and the development of the country's industrial sector.

The visit was attended by Dr Julia García, scientific director, Dr Raül Zurita, director of the Innovation Unit, Dr Miriam Gironès, director of business development of IGTP’s Centre for Comparative Medicine and Bioimage (CMCiB), Dr Sara Capdevila, technical director of the CMCiB, Dr Cristina Vilaplana, head of institutional relations, Carles Esquerré, managing director, and Dr Jordi Barretina. The attendees and Dr Belda shared the vision of a campus that has become a biomedical research and innovation hub, with great potential for collaborations, both in academia and with sector companies and, therefore, of generating large scientific projects of high value and impact.

The Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) is a public research centre located in Badalona. Its main objective is to increase scientific knowledge in order to transform it into solutions to improve the health and medical care of patients and the community.

The Institute is associated with one of the major university hospitals in the Barcelona area, the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, and is part of the Can Ruti biomedical campus. IGTP is a CERCA centre and is also accredited as a centre of excellence by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) and is in charge of coordinating the management and scientific strategy of the campus, working in close collaboration with the other centres.
