About
The Clinical and Experimental Microbiology Group, led by Dr. Pere-Joan Cardona, Head of the Microbiology Service at Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol, constitutes a consolidated multidisciplinary research group accredited by the Catalan Government. The Group has been involved in the Spanish research networks REIPI (Red Española de Centros de Investigación en Patología Infecciosa), RESITRA (Redes de Grupos de Infección y Trasplante), and currently several group members belong to CibeRes (Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red en Enfermedades Respiratorias) while some others belong to CiberEsp (Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red en Epidemiología y Salud Pública).
The research group focuses its activity in the development, standardization and clinical evaluation of microbiological, immunological and molecular techniques susceptible to be used in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, together with the development of "in vivo" experimental models including the Drosophila model, the study of the molecular mechanisms underlying antimicrobial resistance, the assessment of the antimicrobial activity of new antiseptic and disinfectants, and the fight against nosocomial infection through classic and molecular epidemiology tools. Molecular epidemiology through whole genome sequencing has also been applied to pathogens of public health interest, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis (as reference centre in Catalonia) or SARS-CoV-2, for surveillance purposes and especially for the characterization of outbreaks. The intense activity in R+D during the last 25 years has encouraged several scientists from the hospital service to develop their own career as independent groups within the IGTP, these are the "Experimental Tuberculosis Unit" (Cris Vilaplana); "Clinical Virology and new diagnostic tools group" (Elisa Martró) and "Innovation in respiratory infections and tuberculosis diagnosis" (José Domínguez & Cristina Prat), with whom we collaborate very closely.
The group aims to be the reference for the "pathogen view" of the Campus; this is possible due to its privileged view of daily service in the Hospital collaborating with the medical staff in the diagnosis, prophylaxis and treatment of infectious diseases. The group has a strong tradition of cooperation and networking and offers to collaborate with all the research groups of the IGTP and to the School of Medicine of the UAB of the Campus, to link the magic triangle of healthcare, research and education. In addition the group has the ambition of being a reference group for innovation and tech-transfer activities on the campus.

Research lines
The large size of this group based in the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital Microbiology Service means and its tradition of undertaking resaerch in a wide range of networks and collaborations means that it has many lines of research. Some of these are detailed on the pages of the groups listed above, others are demonstrated by the list of projects below.

Germans Trias discovers a biomarker to predict whether tuberculosis infection will lead to active disease
The discovery, published in the journal Pathogens, paves the way for accelerating the design of efficient vaccines and treatments against the disease.
The IGTP and the Clinical Laboratory North Metropolitan Area are the first to publish the complete sequence of a sample of monkey pox virus
The IGTP and the Microbiology Service of the Clinical Laboratory of the North Metropolitan Area led by the researcher Elisa Martró have been the first to carry out the complete sequencing of a sample of monkey pox virus in Spain. This is a milestone in itself, but will also be fundamental for epidemiological surveillance of the infection and the study of future outbreaks as it provides a description of the genetic material of the virus.
