Projects on COVID-19 at the IGTP

The Can Ruti Campus is known for world-class research into infectious diseases. Many groups at the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) work closely with the Infectious Disease Service and the Department of Microbiology at the Germans Trias Hospital on diverse diseases such as legionella, tuberculosis, hepatitis and other infections.

The presence of two centres specialized in research into HIV and vaccines, as are the IrisiCaixa, AIDS Research Institute, and the Fight AIDS Foundation provide an enormous expertise and technical preparation in virology.

Additionally the IGTP has recently opened the world-class Comparative Medicine and Bioimage Centre of Catalonia (CMCiB) with the latest barrier facility and animal biosafety level 3 unit for infectious models, which is fully prepared for a wide range of pre-clinical studies.

These factors have meant that the Institutions on the Can Ruti Campus, and the IGTP particularly, were ideally placed to take up the challenge presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and respond immediately to the healthcare and research needs. This includes solving problems encountered by the front-line healthcare workers and also carrying out research into methods of prevention and treatment, such as vaccines, ways to prevent severe disease developing and providing therapies for the acutely ill.

The group formed by IGTP researchers of the CMCiB and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya BarcelonaTech (UPC) has been at the forefront of reporting of the pandemic with their predictions at Catalan, national and international level on the progress of the virus across the world.

With all these factors, the researchers of the IGTP and the Can Ruti Campus played key roles as advisors and communicators during the pandemic and will continue to publish the results of the ongoing research.
