Incorporating the sex and gender perspective in health and biomedical research content and presentation of the Hipàtia Toolkit

14/06/2022 17-19h

Online event

In this webinar, we will provide an overview of the creative power of sex, gender, and intersectional analysis for discovery and innovation and will explore practical considerations for the operationalization of sex- and gender-sensitive research in health and biomedicine. In addition, we will present the Hipatia Toolkit developed to help researchers integrate gender dimension in their ongoing research. A lively Q&A session will follow each speaker. Moderated by Paula Adam (AQuAS).

PART 1) Gendered Innovations in Health and Biomedicine-Analytical Puzzles and Next Steps (50')

Londa Schiebinger. John L. Hinds Professor of History of Science. Director, Gendered Innovations in Science, Health & Medicine, Engineering, and Environment. Stanford University

How can we harness the creative power of sex, gender, and intersectional analysis for discovery and innovation? This talk will discuss analytical techniques with examples to look specifically at how sex & sex interact, how sex & gender interact, and at the need for intersectional analysis

To match the global reach of science and technology, Gendered Innovations was developed through a collaboration of over 200 experts from across the United States, Europe, Canada, and Asia. Major funders include the European Commission, the U.S. National Science Foundation, and Stanford University.

PART 2) The operationalization of sex- and gender-sensitive research in Health and biomedicine research (50')

Sabine Oertelt-Prigione. Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands

Professor of sex- and gender-sensitive medicine at the University of Bielefeld, Germany

If researchers decide to focus on sex and gender in their work, the first question is: how do you do it? What should be considered and where does one start? In this presentation we will explore how sex and gender are currently operationalized in health and biomedical research. What can we measure during the experiments and what should be reported in scientific publications. Using examples from different biomedical fields, we will explore practices and formulate recommendations.

PART 3) Presentation of the Hipatia Toolkit: The Sex and Gender Perspective in Research Toolkit (20')

Maite Solans Domènech. Agència de Qualitat I Avaluacions Sanitàreis de Catalunya (AQuAS)

This toolkit is part of the work of the Hipatia of Alexandria Community of Practice (HACoP) and is designed to guide researchers in considering accounting for sex and/or gender in basic science, clinical, health system and population health studies.
