The Patients’ Association Chromo22 raises 50,000 euros for research into Neurofibromatosis Type 2

Chromo22 backs research as the best way to improve quality of life for patients

On 22 December the patients' association Chromo22 signed an agreement with the IGTP in which they formalize a donation of 50,000 euros for research into Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2).  NF2 is a genetic disease that has a significant impact on the nervous system and predisposes people to tumor formation. Ana María Mercé Welsch of Chromo22 and Dr Manel Puig Domingo, director of the IGTP signed the agreement in an informal ceremony at the institute.

Chromo22 is an association of patients and families dedicated to collecting money for research into Neurofibromatosis Type 2.  It is based in Begues, Baix Llobregat, near Barcelona, but operates widely through social networks and contacts.

Research in to Neurofibromatosis at the Germans Trias Hospital is carried out in the context of the Phakomatoses CSUR (Spanish National Health System Reference Centre) HGTiP-ICO where researchers and doctors work in a multidisciplinary team to improve quality of life for NF patients.

Dr Ignacio Blanco, coordinator of the CSUR on Phakomatoses and Dr Eduard Serra, of the Hereditary Cancer Group at the IGTP and member of the CSUR team, explain how this donation will allow researchers to set up a pilot project to generate and characterize in the laboratory induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) starting from NF2 tumor cells from  different patients. This highly valuable material is not currently available to scientists working on this disease. They are convinced that contributing to reputable research projects in public centres is an excellent way the public can also help improve the quality of life for patients and future patients and added they and their teams would be working closely with Chromo22 and the Town Council in Begues to explain the results of their research to people there. The project will be developed in collaboration with the laboratory of Dr. Ángel Raya from the Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CMRB).
