The funds collected in the 2017 edition of "La Marathon de TV3" and "Catalunya Ràdio" fundraiser will pay for 36 top-ranked biomedical research projects on infectious diseases with the aim of creating new tools for diagnostics and prevention and more efficient treatments to provide more years of quality life for patients. The 55 researchers who will carry out the research received their certificates today in an event that took place on Tuesday in the Catalan and Balearic Island Academy of Medical Sciences and Health. Two of these projects will be carried out at the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP) on the Can Ruti Campus.

Germans Trias researchers lead an international clinical trial to halt the advance of multiple sclerosis using cell therapy
A team of researchers from the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital and Institute on the Can Ruti Campus, have started a phase I trial to slow the progress of multiple sclerosis (MS) with a cell product that uses the patient's own cells and reprograms their immune system.
Since 2007 the Immunopathology Group led by Dr Eva Martínez-Cáceres and Dr Cristian Ramo Tello at the IGTP has been working to develop a new treatment for autoimmune diseases, in this case for multiple sclerosis. To help their work in this task, Dr Martinez Cáceres has coordinated a COST project, a European network of scientists working on similar problems; the project concluded in 2017 and has now published its scientific report.
Scientists warn that a widespread lack of iodine threatens brain development in children. Iodine insufficiency is one of easiest public health problems to solve, even though it affects so many people worldwide. According to experts, the key to preventing iodine insufficiency is consumption of adequate amounts in a sustained and continued way. The " Krakow Declaration on Iodine" created by the EUthyroid Project calls on those responsible for European policy to support measures to eliminate iodine insufficiency.
