Flow cytometry and Confocal Digital Microscopy are complementary techniques that have arisen to enhance the observation capabilities of conventional microscopy. Given the strong interest in haematology, immunology and oncology of the researchers in the institute a Flow Cytometry Unit was established in 1998 and one year later a Confocal Digital Microscope was added to core equipments.

Services
The unit works as a self‐service facility for trained users under the Head supervision for flow cytometric analysis and microscopy. The Unit personnel also perform cell sorting experiments.
Equipment
Cell sorter:
- FACSAria II (Becton Dickinson). Blue, violet and red Laser with 15 parameters (FSC, SSC, FL1-13). ACDU (Automated Cell Deposition Unit), 4-way sorting, temperature control and AMO (Aerosol Management Option). NEW ADQUISITION, AUGUST 2008.
- FACSVantage SE (Becton Dickinson). Laser Coherent Enterprise dual line 488/357(UV) nm. Seven parameters (FSC, SSC, FL1‐5). Options installed: MacroSort, ACDU (Automated Cell Deposition Unit). Workstation Apple Macintosh G3.
- Automated immunomagnetic beads cell separator: AutoMACS (Miltenyi Biotec). Maximal load 4 x 109 cells.
Cell Analyzers:
- FACScan (Becton Dickinson). Argon laser (488 nm) with 5 analysis parameters (FSC, SSC, FL1‐3). Workstation Apple Macintosh G4.
- FACScalibur (Becton Dickinson). Argon (488 nm) and red diode laser (633 nm) with 6 analysis parameters (FSC, SSC, FL1‐4). Automatic Loader option installed. Workstation Apple Macintosh G4.
- FACSCanto II (Becton Dickinson). Three laser (405, 488 and 635 nm) with 10 fluorescence detectors. Automatic Loader option installed. Workstation FACSDiva software version 6 (PC).
Digital Confocal Microscopy:
Zeiss Axioskop 2 Microscope, Hamamatsu C5810 Video Camera. Workstations Apple Macintosh G3 and G4. Openlab (Improvision, UK) acquisition and analysis software.
