The Centre d'Estudis Epidemiològics sobre les ITS/HIV/SIDA de Catalunya (CEEISCAT) was created in 1994 and in 2005 was integrated to the Institut Català d’Oncologia (ICO) at Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol (HUGTIP). The centre has a programmatic component under the General Direction of Public Health (Departament de Salut, Generalitat de Catalunya) and a research-based component as centre of excellence on HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) epidemiology. The centre collaborates with the Microbiology Laboratory of HUGTIP. CEEISCAT is the reference body responsible for all surveillance activities on STI/HIV/AIDS in Catalonia, designing, implementing, analyzing and distributing the related information systems on morbidity, mortality, behavioural and microbiological data. Currently, the main research lines are : 1.- The natural history of HIV and its relations with other diseases. 2.- The study of transmission determinants for HIV and STIs. 3.- The validation and implementation of new diagnostic technologies. 4.- The evaluation of health programs. 5.- The merge and use of both formal surveillance data and observational studies. In this sense, our institution is the coordinating centre for both the PISCIS and the NENEXP cohorts studies, following up respectively HIV positive adults and HIV exposed children and their seropositive mothers.. These cohorts participate in different international collaborations like COHERE, ART-CC and CAUSAL. In collaboration with the Fundació SIDA i Societat runs different international projects in Guatemala, supporting STI clinics. The CEEISCAT is a research group within the AGAUR from 1997, a collaborative centre of UNAIDS from 2001 and participates in the spanish network of excellence in Public Health and Epidemiology Research (CIBERSP) since 2002.
