The Group of Translational Research in Endoscopy (TER Group), comprising members of the Digestive Endoscopy Unit of University Hospital Germans Trias (HUGTIP), and the Institute of Research Germans Trias (IGTP), aims to translational research the field of endoscopy, oriented to obtain clinical applicability, developing and optimizing new treatment techniques in endoscopy.
The activity of the research lines has resulted in significant contributions that have increased knowledge in gastrointestinal endoscopy. Studies have led to diagnostic and therapeutic innovations to improve the clinical management of patients suffering from diseases of the digestive tract.
The combination on the one hand of experience in the specific techniques of advanced endoscopy, with proven capacity in this area, and secondly the experience in experimental animal models as well as the possibility of collaboration between researchers from different groups the CIBERehd network, comprised of a mix of technological possibilities difficult to find, and opens the possibility to grow and consolidate a multidisciplinary group for basic research, which seeks an obvious clinical applicability, opening new and original lines of research that advance in endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal disorder.
1. Experimental Endoscopy
We have developed experimental models to reproduce daily clinical practice in gastrointestinal endoscopy. We have been carried out the following research projects:
1.1 Anatomy of rat colon: endoscopic, tomographic and histological study
1.2 Optimization of the preparation of the colon prior to colonoscopy
1.3 Model of colonic micro-perforation in rats
1.4 Model of colonic diverticulosis in rats
2. Experimental Therapy
2.1 Endoscopic shielding technique to prevent complications arising from thermal damage after endoscopic resection
This technique has demonstrates the effectiveness of dressings or endoscopic shields, which can be administered through catheter inserted into the working channel of the endoscope, in preclinical studies in rats and pigs.
2.2 Utility of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in endoscopic resection
We have been able to assess the usefulness and effectiveness of PRP in endoscopic resection, in preclinical studies in rats and pigs.
2.3 "Tri-bio" shields technique: Development an endoscopic plataform to perform drug delivery for topical treatment of inflammatory colitis and colonic neoplasms
3.1 Development of hydrogels "Bi-Bio" bio-absorbable-biodegradable to prevent thermal damage complications after endoscopic mucosal resection and accelerate mucosal healing
New hydrogels have been developed and formulated with an appropriate viscosity and adhesion, to prevent the occurrence of complications and accelerate reepithelialization mucosa.
3.2 Development of hydrogels "Tri-Bio" bio-absorbable-biodegradable-bioactive that act as platforms releasing drugs such as topical treatment of inflammatory or tumorous lesions of the colon
Dressings have been developed with triple biological activity (bioadhesive-biodegradable-bioactive) that can be applied directly to the mucous membranes of colon injury, opening a new line of research, allowing incorporate active ingredients and perform in situ treatments at the time of endoscopy.
3.3 Development of biodegradable stents by using 3-D printer using a combination of various polymers
3. 4 Development of test strips that allow the diagnosis of gallstones, as a strategy to prevent recurrent choledocholithiasi
3.5 Development of flexible needle puncture, allowing the transtumoral cannulation (Tran-Tumor-Cannulation -TTC Needle Needle)
3.6 Development of delivery system biodegradable stents with endoscopic guidance (Endotri-BDStent-Deployment System -EBD System)
3.7 Development of applications for smartphones to improve the quality of bowel preparation
An application has been developed for the iOS system (version 1.0) that improves the quality of the preparation of the colon, to include various educational materials (video, alarm time, images, explanatory text).
At present the version 2.0 for iOS and Android system is under development, with all products in the market.

5. Bowel Cleansing
Various studies have been performed to improve the quality of bowel preparation and patient satisfaction.

We have carried out trials with better endoscopes in order to be able to use a histological approach without obtaining tissue.
